The Monastery of
Olimje - The Baroque Church - The Old Pharmacy
To make this video we visited Olimje twice, in different seasons.
In summertime, it was a brilliant green fairytale landscape to welcome us and we enjoyed trekking around on foot and in mountain bikes across the hills, quite often accompanied by several grazing deer. Despite it's a little community of about 550 inhabitants, Olimje, also offers good pubs, restaurants, swimming pool, recreational playground, thermal
centers, golf course and all the comforts and facilities you are looking for.
Built in the 11th century throughout the centuries the castle has had different owners. In 1658, proto notary Ivan Zakmardy of Zagreb became the new owner and donated the castle to the monks of the Order of St. Paul, in Lepoglava.
They set in Olimje for 120 years and built a magnificent Baroque church. The monks also established a beautiful frescoed pharmacy, considered the third old pharmacy of Europe, still existing and well preserved, after Paris and Dubrovnik.
In 1990, government entrusted the Maribor diocese with the complex of Olimje so, the friars of the Conventual Franciskans Order newly started the activity in the monastery and every year welcome many pilgrims and tourists coming from all Europe. We wish to welcome also you!

The Castle of Rajhenburg &
Brestanica
According to the
historical reconstructions the ancestor of the castle of Rajheburg
(Brestanica) could date to the time of the Romans but its first written
evidence date only to September 29th 895, when Arnulfo of Carantania,
King of the Eastern Franks “it grants three situated real possessions
near the castle of RÎchenburch” to his vassal, the noble Valtuni. And
without knowing it declares to the posterity that this is the most
ancient castle in Slovenia.
In the castle's rooms a series of permanent shows they can be admired on
the history of the castle, the Trappists monks' permanence, the tragedy
of the deportations during the period of Nazi invasion but also frescos
and exhibition of contemporary art. They complete this itinerary the
visit to the near oasis of Ribnik where you can fish, to make excursions
in the woods and to eat to the good restaurant with family management.

The Stična Abbey -
The
Baroque-Gothic Basilica - The Cloister - The Religious Museum of Stična
- The Exhibition on The History of Christianity in Slovenia
The Stična Abbey
was founded in 1136 by Peregrinus I,
Patriarch of Aquileia and is situated near present-day
Ivančna Gorica
and is the oldest monastery in Slovenia.
Originally, the Abbey was composed by a Romanesque basilica with three
naves and five apses, a vaulted cloister, a Chapter House and was
surrounded by boundary fortified walls to protect it against Turkish
raids.
In 1623,
in the time of the Abbot Jakob Reinprecht, the basilica as well as some
other parts of the monastery went under severe restore ending with the
present pseudo Baroque-Gothic style.
In 1784,
the monastery was dissolved by Joseph II and only in 1898, after 114
years of decaying, the Stična Abbey was
restored again to its importance as the religious, economic, and
cultural centre of Dolenjska. Among the tombstones immured inside
the church you can admire that dedicated to Duchess Virida Visconti of
Milan that was supposedly buried here in 1414 as a great benefactor of
the monastery.
The Abbey is also
famous for the
vaulted medieval cloister with gothic frescoes, the stuccoworks in
Baroque style adorning the Refectory ceiling and other artistic
curiosities. Besides, we suggest to visit its interesting historical
religious museum and the exhibition dedicated to Christianity in
Slovenia.
In the pharmacy-shop
you can relax and buy home made remedies and herb teas based on the
receipts of the famous herbalist Father
Simon Ašič.
